U.S. Surgeon General Health Radon Advisory

"Indoor radon gas is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk to families all over the country. It's important to know that this threat is completely preventable. Radon can be detected with a simple test and fixed through well-established venting techniques."

Radon is a radioactive gas that is odorless, tasteless and colorless that comes from the natural radioactive breakdown of uranium in the soil.  This is a concern in all homes with underground features because it has the capabilities of causing cancer when present in high doses.  Radon can enter the house in many ways including:

  • Cracks in cement floors and walls

  • Sump Pump holes and drains

  • Gaps around utility pipes and wires

  • Crawl spaces leading directly into the dwelling

The EPA indicates that levels of 4 picocuries or higher are toxic to the human body and elevate the risk of lung cancer.  It is estimated that 1 out of every 15 homes has an elevated radon level according to the EPA.  This is why radon test's are important in any home inspection.
